iVillage Woman of the Week: Betty Suarez from 'Ugly Betty'

Each week we pick one woman who's done something to make us proud. This week we're loving Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) on Ugly Betty for giving us four years of laughs as the fearless, fashion-challenged, aspiring magazine editor on the ABC comedy.

When Betty first walked into the shiny Mode offices, she stuck out for her lack of style and sophistication. But through the years her look evolved as she assimilated into the fashion world. She eventually ditched her braces -- and that unfortunate poncho! -- but she always stayed true to herself. And her hard work paid off as she climbed the rungs of the corporate ladder. Not even the conniving, stiletto-wearing Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) could hold her back. In the season finale, which aired Wednesday night, Betty left behind her native New York City and took her plucky attitude to London for the next chapter in her career.

We're sad to see Ugly Betty come to an end, but we've got to hand it to Ferrera (and executive producer Salma Hayek) for creating a character who proved you don't have to be a fashionable size 2 to follow your dreams. And her positive portrayal of a real character who looks like a real woman -- and not a model-thin version of what TV producers think represents a real woman -- inspired us all.
