The Ugly Christmas Sweater Just Got Tackier

Deck the halls -- and your sweater -- with an app that takes the tacky to a whole new level

Wish you could take your Ugly Christmas Party to the next level of true tackiness?

Yep, there’s an app for that.

Mark Rober, a former NASA engineer, has come up with sweater featuring a hole that nestles your smartphone, the New York Daily News reports. Simply don your Digital Dudz sweater (styles include a crackling fire place, caroling kitty, creepy Santa and snowing snowglobe), slip your mobile device into the hidden open pocket, download the app that flashes a GIF-like image, toss back some ’nog and enjoy your new title as King or Queen of the holiday soiree. Seriously, jingle bells and tinsel fringe will look soo Christmas 2012 compared to this getup.

The sweaters, priced at $54.95 and $64.95, as well as the free app download, available at both the App Store and Google Play, can be found at

Rober, who once worked on the Curiosity Rover, now exploring Mars, tells the newspaper his favorite thing to hear about his invention is, why didn’t I think of that?

“To me, that’s the hallmark of good design,” he tells the Daily News. “It’s the same at NASA -- essentially, we’re designers ... but for spaceships.”

Previously, Rober gained Internet fame when, at Halloween, he posted a viral YouTube video showing a DIY gory costume that used iPads duct taped to his front and back, along with FaceTime and fake blood, to make it look like he had a giant hole in his middle.

Clever? Yes. But a fire that actually crackles on your ugly sweater? That’s just rocket scientist brilliant.
