Underwater Observation

This handmade tool provides an effective means for observing things under water. Use this magnifier year-round at ponds and tide pools for a closer look at the wonderful world beneath the water's surface.

What You Will Need:

  • large disposable plastic cup or 1-liter plastic bottle
  • plastic wrap
  • rubber band
  • objects to observe under water, such as small toys or rocks

Cut the top third from the plastic bottle, then cut out the bottom, leaving a clear cylinder. If you are using a plastic cup, cut the bottom off of the cup. Take a piece of clear plastic wrap and use the rubber band to secure it around an end of the cylinder. First have your child observe the objects under water without the magnifier. Then use the magnifier to examine the objects.
