Singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton had a monster hit in 2002 with "A Thousand Miles," in which she sang, "You know I'd walk a thousand miles if I could just see you tonight." Turns out, she may have been singing about a girl. Carlton, 29, came out as bisexual on Saturday night while headlining the Nashville Pride festival in Tennessee. Before a crowd of 18,000 fans, Carlton took a break from her piano to announce, "I've never said this before, but I am a proud bisexual woman."
The singer's declaration of bisexuality comes after a similar public announcement by True Blood star Anna Paquin in April. But there's one big difference: Paquin declared her bisexuality after announcing her engagement to Stephen Moyer. Carlton, on the other hand, is not publicly known to be dating anyone, although she's been linked in the past to John Mayer (whom she called a "bad breaker-upper") and Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins.
So, is Carlton getting ready to announce that she's dating a woman? Maybe not; plenty of female celebs (Lady Gaga, Megan Fox, Drew Barrymore, Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse) have declared a love for women without ever having a (public) same-sex relationship. On the other hand, famous ladies Cynthia Nixon and Portia de Rossi both announced their bisexuality around the time they started seriously dating women -- and both those stars remain in long-term lesbian relationships. Time will tell whether Carlton was hinting at a more specific announcement about her love life, or if she was just declaring solidarity with the GLBT-friendly crowd at her Nashville concert. Either way, we wonder how the talented songwriter will weave this aspect of her identity into upcoming songs, if at all. Carlton is currently at work on her fourth studio album, Rabbits on the Run.
