Quick! Name all five Spice Girls! Can you do it?
Maybe you can, and maybe you can't. But chances are, at least one comes to mind: Victoria Beckham (a.k.a. Posh Spice), guest host today on ABC's The View.
For the record, Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) have stayed busy in recent years with musical solo projects, acting gigs, TV hosting/judging stints, book writing and philanthropy -- but Posh alone has proven her pop-culture staying power. Ten years after the Spice Girls disbanded, Beckham recently guest-judged on American Idol and she's the cover girl on this month's Glamour.
How does she do it? Marrying British soccer legend David Beckham in 1999 certainly solidified her celebrity status. But Posh has forged her own renown as a fashion icon. With paparazzi constantly hovering, she's evolved her original girl-group persona -- dressed to kill -- far beyond the kitsch stage. She's acted as both stylist and model at photo shoots for top fashion glossies. And naturally, she become a fashion designer. Her previous career as a Spice Girl certainly taught this enterprising woman all about branding!
As for this singer/fashionista's savvy TV appearances on this side of the pond: She had a cameo in ABC's Ugly Betty, and recent guest-judging stints on Bravo's Project Runway and Idol.
Posh is doing something right. While her girl-group mates have struggled mightily not to fade into pop culture obscurity, she's gracing magazine covers and national TV series. If visibility is her goal (and of course it is!), then she's succeeding wildly. More girl power to her!
