Apparently, Jessica Lange has not yet tired of her bid to become the scariest human being on television.
After freaking everyone out as a demented nun at an insane asylum in American Horror Story's Season 2, she is back for the show's third incarnation (premiering Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. ET on FX). And this time, she's the sadistic Supreme Witch at a New Orleans school for student witches.
Season 3, called Coven, will toggle back and forth between present-day witches, who are finding themselves under attack, and those who were persecuted 300 years ago. As usual, American Horror Story has released several disturbing promos. Here's the latest one, which includes splattering blood and, naturally, stake burnings. Get ready to scream!
AHS fan favorite Sarah Paulson is also back, this time as the Supreme Witch's estranged daughter and headmistress of the school. So is Taissa Farmiga, who plays a new student. And Season 3 has attracted a number of other big-name stars, too: Gabrielle Sidibe and Emma Roberts play witchy schoolgirls; Kathy Bates plays an 1830's-era serial killer, and Angela Bassett is a historically documented practitioner of voodoo.
"It really is about the witches of Salem pitted against voodoo witches," creator Ryan Murphy told a panel of Emmy voters. "It's been a centuries-long feud, and it's up to Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett to mend the fence."
But despite the chilling promos, Murphy promises this season won't be as grimace-inducing as last season's spine-tingler. "It's much more buoyant and comedic and crafty than last season," he said. "[Season 2] was much darker by design, because it was about heavy social stuff."
Right, and this one is just about, you know, tying young girls up and watching them burn!
