Most people know Coco Chanel as a world-renowned fashion icon. But in Coco Before Chanel, Audrey Tautou tells the story of how the legendary designer got her start.

The French actress, 33, was drawn to the role of Coco and related to her character’s independence. “I’m not a weak person,” she tells iVillage “And I’m kind of strong-minded, too.”

First gaining fame for her critically acclaimed performance in 2001’s Amelie, Tautou says she struggled when she first reached celeb status. “I think sometimes you feel like you’re a fish in an aquarium,” she says. “Everyone is looking at you as if you’re a curiosity. It’s a bit weird in the beginning.”

In 2006 the actress appeared alongside an American A-lister in the box-office hit The Da Vinci Code and couldn’t help being a little starstruck. “I was nervous to meet Tom Hanks,” she says. “It took me at least three weeks to get rid of my stupid smile of shyness.”
