For years now, Jimmy Fallon has been getting laughs at Bruce Jenner's expense -- or, rather, at the expense of his cosmetically altered face. So what did Fallon have to say when that face was staring at him across his host desk? Who knows? Jenner didn't give him a word edgewise.
The former Olympian and current Kardashian patriarch visited Late Night With Jimmy Fallon (weeknights at 12:37 a.m. ET on NBC) on Tuesday night, ostensibly to promote Season 8 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians (which premiered Sunday). But he clearly viewed the appearance as an opportunity for some semi-friendly comeuppance. Watch here:
"I can take it," Jenner said, about the jokes he endures from, well, pretty much every late-night comedian. "I try to do it with humor and wit and everything."
Well, maybe not so much wit. Jenner's rant was awkward to watch. And that's not to mention the fact that his freakish appearance (due, of course, to the many plastic surgeries that started all this) made it hard to concentrate on what he was saying. His complaint that Fallon's producers showed only the least flattering photos is valid. But then again, Fallon's using the photos for comedy. He's certainly not going to pick boring ones!
No doubt Jenner was coming at Fallon from a posture of self-defense. But his jabs seemed to border on mean, especially when he described running into Fallon at an Olympic ceremony in London (which Fallon himself described to David Letterman in September). Jenner described how good it felt to tell Fallon off, and seemed to relish telling viewers about Fallon's loss of composure when he did it.
"You were such a wimp!" he cried.
"I am not a wimp!" Fallon protested. "You are Bruce Jenner!"
Score one for Fallon. Though he'd been the one needling Jenner about his looks, Jenner came off looking like a bully. And Fallon, as always, seemed like a nice guy. Probably because he really is one.
"You can make all the jokes you want," Jenner growled through a smile. "But I guarantee you, Mr. Fallon, that my ass in a good pair of running shorts looks a hell of a lot better than your ass. Okay?"
And that was perhaps the saddest moment of the interview. Does anyone care about the state of Jenner's ass these days? We sure hope not.
Jenner did make one very good point, though. "The Kardashians are invincible," he said, pointing out the huge ratings for the Season 8 premiere. Indeed, the reason Fallon can make all the jokes he wants is because they're still around to provide a punch line. So, really, who's getting the last laugh here?
