On a barely recognizable Earth in the not-too-distant future, survivors of a massive war between humans and several alien races struggle to coexist on the new Syfy series Defiance. They do so, relatively peaceably, in the titular frontier town (you might notice it’s built upon the ruins of St. Louis).
Handing down the law -- and, in some cases, their fair share of disorder -- are four women with very different agendas. Amanda Rosewater (Julie Benz) is the optimistic mayor who isn’t afraid to get tough if it gets the job done. Meanwhile, her sister, Kenya (Mia Kirshner), is the proprietor of Need/Want, a bar/brothel/gambling hall. (Needless to say, there’s plenty of drama that stems from that relationship!) Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) is new to the town, and reluctantly finds herself helping to keep the peace, while the Machiavellian Stahma Tarr (Jaime Murray) and her husband rule the underworld. Check out the behind-the-scenes clip below.
“It’s so exciting how well-defined all the female characters are in their strength,” Benz says of the series, which premieres April 15 at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.
Think you’d fare pretty well in Defiance? Fans can find out just what it takes to survive on a post-apocalyptic Earth by playing the complementary Defiance video game. Story lines that play out on the TV show will affect the online game world as well. But one thing remains the same: These ladies kick butt!
