We honestly never thought Psy would be able to duplicate his "Gangnam Style" success -- but his new single may prove us wrong. "Gentleman," another catchy dance song from the Korean pop sensation, debuted online on Sunday. In less than a week, the video is approaching 150 million views: a new YouTube record. Watch it below!
Not only has the cheeky video gone viral, but the song itself is a hit. "Gentleman" reached No. 1 on the iTunes charts this week, and debuted at No. 12 on the Hot 100. In contrast, Beyonce's last single debuted at No. 20. At the moment, Psy is just two chart positions below Justin Timberlake's latest, "Mirrors." How has Psy reached the big leagues so quickly?
The answer is simple, really: Psy's songs are just fun. Unlike most American pop stars, the Korean singer couldn't care less about being cool or sexy. His videos are silly, his songs are catchy, and his dance moves are easy enough for all of us to do at weddings (after a drink or two, that is). Who cares if we can't understand the words? (Although quite a few Americans can.) Psy is giving us permission to loosen up, enjoy the music, and make ridiculous dance faces. Who doesn't appreciate that?
It's too soon to say whether "Gentleman" can compete with the success of "Gangnam Style" (including 1.5 billion YouTube views). But already, we're starting to see the kinds of parody videos and fan remixes that helped Psy's first hit go mega-viral. So if you want to start getting your "Gentleman" on, here's the basic move. It's even easier than the horse dance!
