The government shutdown has led to a number of things being canceled -- but one couple's wedding wouldn't be one of them, as long as Stephen Colbert had anything to say about it!
Mike Cassesso and MaiLien Le were supposed to get married at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. But because of the shutdown, the memorial is now off-limits. When Colbert heard about their story, he leaped into action and married them himself on Thursday night's episode of the The Colbert Report. Check it out:
An ordained minister, Colbert declared that, "as leader of the Colbert Nation and Earl Lord of the Afterscape, I would provide all canceled government services -- and that includes weddings."
First, Cassesso had a mini bachelor party with his groomsmen, including a round of shots. He even got a celebrity as his best man -- the one and only Smokey the Bear (thanks to the shutdown and all, it's not like Smokey had other plans).
When asked how she felt about her wedding before the shutdown, the bride stated, "I wasn't worried about the government shutting down; I was worried about rain."
Le also expressed how nervous she was to get married on national TV. "Don't you ruin this for me!" Colbert joked. "This is my special day!" And with that -- and a couple more shots -- she made her way down the aisle, holding the show's newly won Emmy as a bouquet. When the pair finally became man and wife, Colbert exclaimed, "Happy shutdown, everybody!"
How grateful is this couple? Later, the new husband tweeted:
Congratulations to the newlyweds -- and to Colbert, for once again saving the day!
