She's a "Firework"! Katy Perry Tops VMA Nominations

The "California Gurl" leads all contenders with nine Video Music Award nominations; Kanye West and Adele also hit it big

Get ready for some fireworks! After an incredible couple of years that have seen "California Gurl" Katy Perry release two hit albums, tour to sold-out crowds and receive two nominations at this year's Grammys, the 26-year-old singer has more reason to celebrate. Perry has received nine MTV Video Music Award (VMA) nominations, the most of any artist this year!

When MTV informed Perry of her nods, she responded excitedly: "Nine? I thought that was a typo or something! Oh my god, really? That's the most nominations I've ever gotten for anything."

Currently traveling with her California Dreams tour, Perry has been nominated for video of the year and best female video for "Firework"; best pop video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"; best cinematography for "Teenage Dream"; and best collaboration, best art direction, best direction, best editing and best special effects for the Floria Sigismondi-directed "E.T.," which features fellow nominee Kanye West. That's quite a list!

West and British songstress Adele are nipping at Perry's heels after earning seven nominations each -- with all of Adele's nods coming for her "Rolling in the Deep" video. Impressive!

Bruno Mars was next in line with four nominations, while Eminem, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj each nabbed three. Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," Perry's "Firework," Tyler, The Creator's "Yonkers," Mars' "Grenade" and the Beastie Boys' "Make Some Noise" will duke it out for the VMAs' top prize, video of the year, when the awards air live on MTV on Aug. 8 (9 p.m. ET)
