Don’t you hate it when someone tells you, “You look tired”? Regardless of any declarations to the contrary, what they’re really saying is, “Gee, you look like crap today.” Should you for any reason doubt this, new research proves it.
According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, people can look hotter just by getting a good night’s sleep. Researchers found that when women and men are well-rested, they’re rated more attractive. When deprived of sleep, those same people score lower in the looks category. Kind of makes you wonder how many beauty pageants have been determined by which contestant got the most sleep the night before.
Sleep deprivation doesn’t just make us uglier, it also makes us look less healthy and -- no surprise here -- more tired. According to the researchers, people have an easy time picking up on others’ lack of sleep. Apparently, there’s a slackness to our face that belies how little shuteye we got the night before. The scientists, from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, speculate that we may be programmed to detect sleeplessness and be turned off by it, because of the health problems and lower life expectancy associated with long-term sleep deprivation. After all, it’s in our genes to look for healthy, robust mates that will produce the hardiest of offspring. Research suggests that long-term lack of sleep is linked to a host of health issues that can cut a life short, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
However, this study didn’t assess the looks of people with chronic insomnia. Volunteers were subjected to only a single night of sleeplessness -- which apparently was enough. If you’ve ever looked in the mirror after a night of tossing and turning, we don’t have to tell you that one night without sleep can make you look worn out. And when we say worn out, what we really mean is like crap.
How do you think you look after a night without sleep? Chime in below.
