The night before the people of Haiti headed to the polls to vote for their new president, former candidate and hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean suffered a frightening injury.
Jean, 41, claimed he was shot in the hand in Port-au-Prince Saturday night, when he stepped out of his car. "The way I can explain it is that the bullet grazed me in my right hand," said the hip-hop singer. "I heard blow, blow, blow and I just looked at my hand."
But the police are telling a different story, saying Jean suffered only a minor cut from glass. "We met with the doctor who saw him and he confirmed Wyclef was cut by glass," Vanel Lacroix, police chief in Petionville where Jean is staying, told Reuters.
Jean was treated in a local hospital and released. "He is doing well," Jean's spokeswoman Cindy Tanenbaum said Sunday.
Jean was in Haiti to support candidate and fellow musician Michel Martelly, who is on the ballot against former first lady Mirlande Manigat in the presidential runoff election.
"It was nothing," Damien Merlo, a spokesman for the Martelly campaign, told CNN of Jean's injury. "He's fine and out and about getting out the vote for us."
In September, Jean officially ended his own bid to be president of Haiti a month after election officials ruled that he was ineligible to run, due to the fact that he had not lived in the country for five consecutive years.
