WATCH: Tim Gunn Reveals Suicide Attempt in Effort to Help Gay Teens

The Project Runway style guru opens up about his difficult teen years and speaks out against bullying

Tim Gunn has revealed a very personal story to the world, in hopes to offer a message of support to gay teens suffering from bullying and ridicule. Joining a slew of other celebrities in the It Gets Better Project, the Project Runway star admits he once tried to take his own life by swallowing more than 100 pills.

"As a 17-year-old youth who was in quite a bit of despair, I attempted to kill myself," Gunn says in the video. "I'm happy to say today that attempt was unsuccessful. But at the time it was all that I could contemplate."

Gunn urges gay youth looking for help to use The Trevor Project, a nationwide suicide prevention hotline.

"I understand the desperation," he says. "I understand the despair. And I understand how isolated you can feel...Reach out. Get help. You're not alone. It will get better—I promise."
