Did you know that melons belong to the cucumber family? Not a particularly useful one, but a fact just the same. The problem with watermelon is storing it -- not finding room for it in your refrigerator, but keeping yourself from eating so much of it that there's nothing left to put away.
WHEN TO BUY
June through September
- Good whole watermelons are symmetrical and pale yellow underneath
- Cut watermelon should reveal deep pink fruit, not frosted with white, nor rusting near the rind, unless it happens to be a yellow-fleshed watermelon, in which case the fruit should be a deep yellow-orange.
HOW TO STORE
Store chopped fruit in a covered container or Ziplock bags for up to three days.
- Slice a whole watermelon into rounds
- Cut each round in half, then cut away the rind before chopping up the fruit
