I recently celebrated a birthday. So, of course, aging (and how to stop it) has been on my mind. Who am I kidding? It doesn't take a birthday for me to think about that!
But amongst all the hair-dying and eye cream application, I've found something to make me smile about getting older (laugh lines be damned!). Advanced Style, a photo blog cultivated by Ari Seth Cohen, documents the wonderful, elegant and oftentimes eccentric looks of New York City's senior set, and proves that fashion sense only gets better with age. Think lots of structured hats, oversized glasses and some serious bauble-tastic accessories!
His subjects include Victoria MacKenzie-Childs, an artist with Rainbow Bright tresses, who shuns the going gray trend in her own way. And actress Marilyn Sokol, who's not afraid to mix and match prints and textures. And the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas, Jean and Valerie, who prefer to "grow old with verve," wearing ah-mazing headpieces.
"My eyes have always been drawn to older people," Cohen told The New York Times last year. "And from a style point of view, I find them more interesting because they are of an age where they don’t have to impress anyone and can wear what they want."
Although his site might not cause you to cancel your next Botox appointment, it may inspire you to wear one of these no-holds-barred "elderly" ensembles to the doc's office!
