Pregnancy journal: Week nineteen, movement!

Our baby woke me up from a sound sleep -- kicking me. At first I didn’t think twice about it. I thought it was Jacob’s little foot nudging me. Although Jacob had been sleeping in his own bed for a while, he’s been in bed with Rob and I again since the move. He likes to sleep snuggled up against me, so naturally in my half-awake state I assumed it was him. Almost with a start I realized that he’d rolled over and was cuddled up against Rob at that moment. This left only two other options. Either my cats had decided to climb in under the covers -- or it was the baby! As I lay there motionless (petting the cat who jumped up when she heard me stir) it happened again … and again. Our baby began kicking literally overnight. In fact, by week’s end s/he was kicking so hard that other people could see it. I don’t remember Jacob growing so strong, so fast. He was kicking noticeably much earlier than this, but as I recall I was the only one who knew it for many weeks.

I am increasingly excited about this pregnancy. Now I feel better equipped to keep tabs on the baby while s/he is still inside me. It seems to remind me of its presence at very opportune moments. Somehow it knows the exact moment Jacob falls asleep -- day or night -- and starts to kick at that time. So precise was its timing for the entire week that it took me many days to find a time that they were both awake to let Jacob feel it. He was so surprised when he patted my tummy to say “night-night” to the baby and it patted back! I was shocked that he took the time to wait for a kick. And, I was very excited to see how happy it made him. I’m somewhat fearful that the precision timing that leads the baby to wake when Jacob falls asleep will translate into the baby crying just as Jacob sleeps and Jacob waking just as the baby drifts off. Perhaps I’m worrying about nothing again.
