Pregnancy Journal: Week thirteen: The midwife

This week was the most frantic yet. We began the week believing the closing on our new home was just ten short days away. We are living in a pile of boxes and are packing more each day. Jacob is growing increasingly curious about the move as well as my ever-increasing size and the developing baby. And, on top of all that, our second trip to the Doctor’s office was scheduled for week’s end.

In all this confusion I’ve found myself feeling worse again. I said it before, I believe most of my problems are stress related. I’m not focusing on the baby as the cause. I’m just fearful that my stress will have adverse effects on such a tiny life. I’m doing my best to rest, and Jacob’s cooperating. He seems to really enjoy a mid-afternoon nap with Mommy each day. He gets up and reminds me that we must do “packn.” So, with my 20-month-old son as a motivating force, I’ve dragged on this week.

Jacob has also been the greatest source of joy and entertainment. He learned to count to ten over a month ago. I never expected him to learn that at merely 19 months old! Now he runs around counting -- everything. Whenever he sees a printed number he begins “1, 2 tree…” He’s moving on to identifying the printed numbers and he is asking about letters. He’s beginning to scare me, because at this pace he’ll be more advanced than his Mom by year’s end! He’s also been stringing together “sentences.” To date, they’ve been complete thoughts, but the words are out of order. The other day as he and I were settling in for a nap Jacob reached up, hugged Daddy and said his first “real” sentence, “I love Daddy.” Both of our hearts skipped a beat and Rob sat hugging him so long he was late for work.
