Pregnancy journal: Week thirty-eight, end of the line?

Really not much happened this week. Jacob and I spent as much time together as possible. We talked at great length about how we’ll plant a garden this spring and how he’d like to grow lima beans. (I know, don’t ask me! I love lima beans, but what two year old wants them above all other possible fruits and veggies? Mine does!) This will be our special project. We can plant and weed and pick the fruits in the afternoons while Daddy works. We’ve purchased a “special seat” for the baby to play in outside while we work. It’ll be protected by a large sun shield and a fully enclosed netting to keep out creepy crawlies. Jacob and I can have our time “alone” while we’re all together. So we spent many a night this week browsing through seed catalogs and watching the “house channel” on TV.

As the week drew to a close I had my 38-week checkup at the doctor’s office and this week saw one of the doctors. The appointment was very quick. We listened to the baby’s heartbeat, which was just fine. He confirmed that it is indeed head down and ready to enter the world. I was checked again to be sure that the head had descended far enough to account for a still 1cm small measurement. (Once again, that was determined to be the cause.) We begged for a magic cure-all, which would induce labor immediately and again received none. In fact, the doctor told of a current patient who came in for her 37 week internal and was found to be 5cm dilated. He’d assured her that she should pack all bags and plan to see him that weekend, as he was on call. Now, three weeks later, she’s still walking around at 5cm and is very frustrated with him. He said that whenever he tells his colleagues not to expect a given couple anytime soon, they’re the first to call the on-call doctor that night and deliver within hours. So, we asked him to call an emergency staff meeting to let everyone know that I’m still only 2cm and not very much effaced and that they should erase us from their schedules for a week or two. Maybe that way we’ll have this baby sooner rather than later!
