If you're wondering where "Weird Al" Yankovic has been lately, we have the answer: He's been recording material for a new album, including a parody of the Lady Gaga single "Born This Way." The bad news: Yankovic claims that Gaga didn't think the song was funny, so it won't appear on his new album and his fans won't get to see a hilarious music video. The good news: Weird Al released the song on YouTube, and you can listen to it below!
So what happened with Lady Gaga, who's usually the first person to make fun of herself? According to Weird Al, she didn't give a reason for rejecting the song -- but she made him jump through a whole lot of hoops before she said "no." In a lengthy post on his blog, Yankovic explains that he only needs one song -- a big lead single -- in order to release his upcoming album. When he came up with the idea for "Perform This Way," he sent it to Gaga's people, who said she would need to hear the song before approving it. Yankovic wrote up a lyric, but she still said she needed to hear it, or else the answer was no. So Yankovic skipped a family vacation in order to make a full recording -- only to have Gaga turn his request down."Believe me… nobody is more disappointed than I am," the singer blogged.
Yankovic, who planned to donate proceeds from the single to the Human Rights Campaign, decided to release the song on YouTube instead. He'll soon be offering free MP3 downloads on his website.
Gaga's camp is singing a different tune however. A source "extremely close" to Mother Monster tell TMZ that they have no idea what Al is talking about. "There must have been a misunderstanding because (Gaga) is in no way trying to block the release of the parody," says the insider. "She's busy touring and hasn't heard the song yet. Her manager hasn't had a chance to play it for her yet." What's more, says the insider, "She's a huge Weird Al fan."
This battle of "he said, she said" aside, the question now that the song is out there is: Is it any good? Honestly, "Perform This Way" isn't his best work, but it has its clever moments. Here's a sample lyric:
I'm so completely original
My new look is all the rage
I'll wrap my small intestines 'round my neck
And set fire to myself on stage
I'll wear a porcupine on my head
On a W-H-I-M
And for no reason now I'll sing in French
What do you think: Should Lady Gaga give Yankovic the thumbs up to put the song on his album? Or should Weird Al just move on to another target? The Black-Eyed Peas are always good parody material...
