Selena Gomez, We're Liking the Confident New You!

So long, good-girl image! The Spring Breakers star is rocking her grown-up look -- and attitude!

Selena Gomez is loving the single life, and it's loving her right back. During a Monday night appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, Gomez, 20, was radiant, confident -- and even made a joke at the expense of her ex, Justin Bieber. Watch the clip below!

"Now, the last time [Justin Bieber] was on, he and I got into a conversation, and he said something and then I said something...and I made him cry," Letterman told Gomez.

"Well then that makes two of us," Selena replied.

Not only did her joke earn a fist-bump from Letterman, but it showed how far Gomez has come in the past few months. While she was still dating the "Beauty and a Beat" singer, Selena often appeared shy and nervous in interviews -- especially when asked to talk about her relationship. No doubt she was painfully aware that much of the world knew her as "Justin Bieber's girlfriend," rather than a TV star or a singer.

Lately, though, we're seeing a new side of Selena. Obviously, there's her new film Spring Breakers, in which she, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson play bikini-wearing, gun-wielding, sexed-up teens. (Goodbye, Disney!) But there's also her upcoming solo album, which is a departure from her poppy love songs with former band The Scene. She has called the record a "tell-all," and said it's the first time she's worked through personal experiences in her music. Sure enough, the first leaked single, "Rule the World," appears to tell her side of the Bieber break-up. (Sample lyric: Our love was meant to rule the world. You came and broke the perfect girl. ... Forget you ever knew my name.)

Maybe Selena is the rare celebrity who will be able to move past her child-star image with minimal drama. Right now, she's giving the impression of a self-assured adult who knows what she wants -- unlike, say, Bieber, who complains about not being taken seriously while acting like a teenager. Granted, Bieber is two years younger. But when he debuted that sad little mustache on Instagram the other day, it seemed like a pretty good metaphor for how he's trying, and failing, to move into adulthood. Selena, on the other hand, is nailing it.
