On July 6, Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail, followed by 90 days of inpatient rehab for violating the terms of her probation on a drunk driving charge. Now let's hope her much-deserved punishment sends a strong message to her youthful fans.
The truth is, young Hollywood is famous for breaking the rules with little or no legal repercussion. But our kids need to know that that won't fly in the real world. These young stars make drug abuse, drunk driving, and partying look glamorous -- or at the very least acceptable -- to our tweens and teens.
Sure, stars have been doing this for decades, but when there’s no penalty for their actions, these crimes seem insignificant: A slap on the wrist or a couple days of picking up trash, and they're back on TMZ shopping at Fred Segal.
Unless your kids are avid news watchers, they're rarely exposed to the judicial system. They’re not paying attention to who’s been arrested for drunk driving, drug abuse, or hit-and-runs across the nation. But if a celebrity commits a crime, kids know within 10 seconds flat –- the amount of time it takes to see it on Facebook, Twitter, text message, or hear it from a friend who has.
That’s why it’s so important that these celebrities do not get special treatment. Our kids don’t know these celebs are being favored, they just think, that’s what you get. The legal ramifications for these crimes need to be firm and clear before SCRAM bracelets become the newest Hollywood trend.
