What Does Searing Mean?

I have a recipe for seared tuna which sounds great. I have never made it before. What exactly does searing mean? --iVillager demarco887

Dear demarco887:

Searing is to brown meat quickly by subjecting it to a very high heat, either in a skillet, under a broiler or in a very hot oven. The purpose of searing is to seal in the meat's juices.
