I am sorry to have been out of touch, but we were very busy this week at the store. What Not to Wear came to film another episode, and we had so much to do to get the store ready.
The subject was Theresa from upstate New York. She is a cello player and needed to refresh her look. They chose us for shop day two, where she is ambushed by Stacy and Clinton in the store and they help her go through her clothing choices.
We see so many women in our store every day and it is very much like what they do each week on What Not to Wear. At Lee Lee’s Valise, I take a look at the customer’s shape and try to find clothing that will flatter her body and be appropriate for her skin tone and personal style. Theresa was a modified apple who was smaller on the top than the bottom, but was basically a size 14. Most plus-sized clothing is geared towards an hour glass or pear shape, and doesn’t take into account if you have boobies or a little belly. You would think that it would be easy for someone to find clothing that would fit a size 14! But you see “there’s the rub” …and I am not talking about thighs chaffing either.
Most clothing manufacturers don’t want to use another fit model to make a new pattern for the same dress. They just grade up from a size two. So the further up you go, the more the proportions are distorted. When someone tries on a true woman’s fit from a plus pattern, it is guaranteed to fit better. So we had many great pieces that were perfect for her shape.
She loved the green leaf print Milly from Olivia Harper, which is an exclusive to Lee Lee’s Valise. Theresa will be wearing it for a good portion of the show, as she was wearing it when she was talking on camera with Stacy and Clinton as they went over the reasons why it flattered her shape. She also picked a Brianna top, as well as several other pieces, and some jewelry that you will see on the show. But I think she was the happiest when she found out about the microfiber Spanx.
She was wearing the Higher Power Spanx that feel as though you are wrapped up in an Ace bandage. The worst part about them is that they come with a “pee” hole. That’s right, some idiot thought it would be a good idea for you to pee through your Spanx, because once you get them on you wouldn’t want to take them off! You are wrapped up like a mummy from your bra down to your thighs. The positive side is that you have a bit more room in the crotch area…and a breeze to boot!
So the microfiber Spanx was a revelation to her. The subjects of the show are under a great deal of stress. They are pulled and pushed from here to there and given tons of advice. So I always take a moment to check their temperature and see if there is anything I can do to make it a little easier for them. I went into the dressing room with her to see how she was doing. And that’s when we started talking about her Spanx. I agreed with her that they are uncomfortable, and I personally didn’t like that style of Spanx. I told her that I gear my clients towards the microfiber style. The microfiber one does not have a “pee” hole. Which is okay ….since I wouldn't want to be the girl at the party that smells like urine!
Imagine you excuse yourself from talking to that hot guy at a party and then came back from the ladies room smelling like the subway train on a hot summer afternoon! I know, a bit graphic…but come on…what if you have an accident…what if it streams to the left?
She tried on the microfiber Spanx and was an instant convert. The only thing was that she felt a little constricted in the thigh area. Since she had the stylists of What Not to Wear right there at her beck and call they told her that they could have the seamstress open up the crotch area for her when they have her other clothes altered. And that’s what they did.
Theresa found quite a few pieces and it looked like it will be a very successful show. It should air in about six or seven weeks and I will let you know when it is on.
Oh, and here’s some gossip for you. Nick the hairstylist is no longer with the show. They will have a new person cutting hair in upcoming weeks. If you are a big fan of the show like me, I know you will look forward to the upcoming episodes.
