When actress Salma Hayek made news breastfeeding a hungry baby on a recent trip to Africa, moms everywhere wondered: Is that OK to do? It turns out that Hayek isn’t the only one sharing breast milk these days. In a truly unique story out of Michigan, a whole neighborhood of women stepped in to breastfeed an infant whose mother died shortly after he was born.

Women across the country are using strangers’ breast milk to feed their children—and are even donating their milk if they produce extra. Here’s what you need to know about receiving—or donating—breast milk.
