When should my period return?

This is a post-pregnancy question. I had a baby August 3rd, in fact Jake just had his 6-month checkup. I'm wondering when I'm supposed to start getting my period again. I breastfed for the first 3 months, but it seems as if I should have started by now, it's been over 3 months since I stopped. I had started thinking that I was pregnant again, but I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative.

Most women get their first period within 12 weeks if not breastfeeding but if you breastfed for 3 months, it may take another 3-4 months or even up to 6 months to reestablish your cycle. This type of delay is common.

Because you do not know if you have ovulated or not yet, it is important to use an effective method of birth control, such as foam and condoms. You could perhaps, learn to check cervical mucus and take basal body temperatures to help you decipher your cycle. I would recommend a great book, "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler to help you interpret the various signs and symptoms.
