After listening to Whitney Houston describe what her marriage to Bobby Brown was like, it's almost impossible to imagine how they were able to stay together for 14 years.
In a world full of drugs and abuse, Whitney told Oprah Winfrey that Bobby's contempt for her led them through many knock-down, drag-out fights. "He slapped me once, but he got hit on the head three times by me," Whitney said, telling Oprah that the abuse was much more often verbal than it was physical – but not before recalling one argument that had an inebriated Bobby spitting on her – in her face.
"He spit on me. He actually spit on me," she said. "And my daughter was coming down the stairs and she saw it. That was pretty intense. I didn't grow up with that and I didn't understand why that occurred – [why] he had such a hate for me because I loved him so much."
But Whitney fully admits that they both abused cocaine and marijuana – and that Bobby himself was the singer's most addictive factor.
"He was my drug," she said of her codependent relationship with Bobby. "I didn't do anything without him."
In the end, Whitney says, it was Bobby's jealousy over her success that tore them apart.
"I think somewhere inside, something happens to a man when a woman has that much control or has that much fame."
