In four weeks, Rebecca Black has gone from unknown 13-year-old girl to viral music video sensation. So is she going to be the next Miley Cyrus? Well, no. Not exactly. The video for Black's pop single "Friday" is being called the "worst music video ever" by media outlets.
Watch it below:
How could it possibly be that bad, you ask? Let us count the ways!
First there are the stunningly awful lyrics: two verses about deciding whether to ride in the front or back seat of a friend's car, and a bridge that literally breaks down the days of the week:
Yesterday was Thursday
Today it is Friday
Tomorrow is Saturday
We we we so excited, we so excited
We gonna have a ball today
Tomorrow is Saturday
And Sunday comes afterward.
Not exactly Taylor Swift territory, is it? Then there's the repetitive, nasal chorus ("Friday, Friday...") that sticks to your brain like a parasite. And what's with the faux R&B touches, like the Rihanna-esque shout of "eh!" and the guy who shows up in his car to rap about a schoolbus? The final offender is the song's egregious use of Auto-Tune -- which, combined with the vacant look in Black's eyes, makes us wonder if she is actually a robot programmed by Disney to replace Demi Lovato.
For all the jokes that are being cracked about Rebecca Black, though, there's no denying she's made a big splash online. The singer is a heavily trending topic on Twitter, with Joe Jonas even tweeting a lyric from "Friday." YouTube is already filling up with earnest acoustic covers of the song. And the video was featured on Comedy Central's web-centric TV series, Tosh.0. Hopefully, Rebecca Black is the kind of kid who can laugh at herself and enjoy those fifteen minutes of notoriety. Maybe she'll even end up in some kind of viral video hall of fame, alongside the "Chocolate Rain" guy and Obama Girl. Or maybe should just pick a seat in the car and go back to school.
