Wendy Williams has dared to diss one of America's most beloved celebrities. In anticipation of Beyonce's upcoming HBO documentary, the talk show host -- who calls herself a "Beyonce fan" -- made a crack about the singer's intelligence.
"I am a Beyonce fan. I'm going to be watching this documentary even if she doesn't introduce us to new stuff," Williams said on Thursday's Wendy Williams Show. "Fortunately one of the TVs in our kitchen has closed captioning, so I'll be able to understand what she says. You know Beyonce can't talk. Beyonce sounds like she has a fifth-grade education"
When the audience booed, Williams went on the defense. "Excuse me, I just said I was a fan," she said. "But we have to call a spade a spade."
Does Beyonce deserve to have her intelligence called into question? We'll concede that she may have the handwriting of a teenage girl, but Beyonce has demonstrated time and again that she's one of the savviest stars on the planet. With that in mind, here are five reasons why Beyonce is smarter than a fifth grader.
1. She didn't party through her teen years.
Even though she became famous as a teenage member of Destiny's Child, Beyonce never caused a scandal by acting out. How many former teen idols can say that?
2. She keeps her private life just private enough.
Beyonce is no oversharer, but she does know when to open up. Remember when everyone was clamoring for those first photos of baby Blue Ivy? Beyonce and Jay-Z put the pictures on their personal website, giving us all a glimpse of their family album without the fake staging of a magazine cover. (Though of course, Bey's makeup was still perfect.)
3. She doesn't live in a bubble.
Beyonce recognizes the influence she has, and uses it for good -- whether it's through charity work or political endorsements.
4. She fired her own father.
Plenty of stars, from Michael Jackson to Lindsay Lohan, have suffered the consequences of employing family members who may not have their best interests at heart. Beyonce's parents have both been instrumental in her career, but in 2011, she dropped her father as a manager -- allegedly because she discovered he was stealing from her. That's the kind of tough decision that few adults, let alone fifth graders, could make.
5. She turned herself into a movie star.
So many huge pop stars, including Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera, have bombed on the big screen. It's not an easy transition. But Beyonce made all the right moves, playing supporting roles and working her way up to top billing in films like Dreamgirls. As a result, she's convinced us all that there's nothing she can't do.
So now the question is: Can Beyonce pull off directing a documentary? Or will she prove Wendy Williams right? We'll find out when her HBO special airs on Feb. 16.
