On Monday night's episode of The Bachelorette, host Chris Harrison sat down with Emily Maynard as she opened up about her breakup with Brad Womack. But, as the single mom recounted how her engagement to last season's Bachelor fell apart, the audience wondered why the man himself wasn't there.
"I think it was too hard for him," Maynard tells People.com, of Brad's absence. "He wants privacy just as much as I do. The only reason (I did it) is because I don't want people following me anymore. I have a daughter I have to protect," she says, referring to being hounded by reporters and paparazzi since the final rose ceremony last May.
"That was my main reason for coming here. If I didn't have that I would have just let it ride and never been on TV again."
Maynard, 25, cried through most of the interview, telling Harrison that she feels like she "will always be in love" with the Texan, but that their relationship just didn't work out. Harrison said he tried to get Womack to open up, but the feelings were just way too raw for him.
"Once I found out it was just Emily, I reached out to Brad because I didn't want there to be an awkwardness or hard feelings," Harrison says. "I talked to Brad. I knew how emotional he was. We talked, and there's still a lot of love between them, but it was too difficult for him to talk."
Despite the split, Emily -- who may just be the next Bachelorette -- says she and Brad remain very close, talking and texting nearly every day.
"I know that I love him and more than anything he's a friend to me and he's been a friend to me," Maynard says. "I'll always love Brad."
