Charlie Hunnam has been busy making Sons of Anarchy -- but that's not why he dropped out of 50 Shades of Grey. Earlier this week, producers of the erotic film revealed that Hunnam would no longer play the coveted role of Christian Grey, due to his "immersive TV schedule." The thing is, his TV schedule is definitely something that would have been negotiated before he accepted the role. So we've been waiting for the real story to come out -- and luckily, The Hollywood Reporter has it.
According to the trade publication, Hunnam chose to leave the film for two reasons. One was that he had conflicts with the creative team. A screenwriter himself, Hunnam wanted changes made to the script, and he wanted input on to how the film was directed. The second reason is the obvious one: He was freaked out about all the attention he was getting.
And if he was freaked out, he had good reason to be. As soon as the casting was announced, Hunnam became a paparazzi target, the subject of intense media scrutiny, and the recipient of hate mail from 50 Shades fans who had their hearts set on other actors. The frenzy around Hunnam was so intense that several of his promotional appearances for the new season of Sons of Anarchy (on which he's starred since 2008) had to be cancelled, and Universal hired bodyguards to accompany him to events.
The fame that comes with starring in a popular franchise is not for the faint of heart. In exchange for the magazine covers and the fabulous lifestyle, you get a complete lack of privacy and a running commentary by the media on your every move. For an example of what Hunnam may be trying to avoid, there are plenty of videos of Twilight, Harry Potter and Hunger Games stars trying to get through their daily lives while being dogged by photographers and fans.
Here's a painful video of Robert Pattinson trying to reason with the paparazzi who are literally following him everywhere he goes. It doesn't work.
Here's Jennifer Lawrence trying to hide behind a menu so she won't be photographed through the windows at a restaurant.
Here's what Kristen Stewart has to deal with whenever she gets off a plane.
Here's what happens when Emma Watson's friend tries to push the paparazzi out of the way.
Here's the kind of security Daniel Radcliffe requires when he's appearing in a play.
Seems exhausting, right? And yet it's the kind of fame many people would kill for. With Hunnam out of the way, another actor will now get his chance to experience the craziness. The short list reportedly includes Jamie Dornan (Once Upon a Time), Francois Arnaud (The Borgias), and Christian Cooke (Romeo & Juliet) -- though fan campaigns for Matt Bomer and Iam Somerhalder are still going strong!
