As everyone now knows, America's favorite unwed teen mom, Bristol Palin, and her babydaddy, Levi Johnston, are engaged yet again, and they announced the surprising news -- even mom Sarah Palin didn't know! -- on the cover of Us Weekly. Though some think this is one giant publicity stunt on Sarah Palin's part, others are totally buying it. So, if this all did go down as Bristol and Levi say it did, why would Bristol not tell her parents first?
It's not unheard of for couples to elope and not tell their parents, but Bristol, 19, not only kept her two-week engagement a secret from her parents, but she also chose to tell Us -- and all of its readers -- first. As the mother of two girls, I can hardly even imagine the hurt, shock and embarrassment felt by finding out from the media that your daughter is engaged. Mama Palin must have been just as blown away by this news as she probably was when she first found out that Bristol was pregnant with son Tripp, now 18 mo. old.
So why would Bristol go public before informing her politician mom that she and Levi, 20, had officially reunited and were together once again? In the Us article, Bristol confessed, "It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board." I'd guess it would be much less intimidating and scary to tell your mom forthright than to have her find out through the media!
Sarah Palin reacted by releasing an immediate luke-warm, politically-correct statement to NBC News, which was read on the Today show: "Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what's best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives." Now, that's the carefully-worded statement we all got to hear -- what I want to know is what Sarah actually said directly to Bristol when she heard the news!
Perhaps Bristol's choice to go public before telling her mom was not the action of a silly teen, but a calculated move by a girl fully aware of her mother's blatant disapproval of Johnston. After all, Sarah Palin has openly criticized the one-time Playgirl model's public behavior, put down his parenting skills and fiercely objected to his negative statements about the Palin family. Maybe Bristol believed that the odds of her mother -- who once referred to Johnston as "Ricky Hollywood" -- giving the couple her blessing were slim-to-none. By announcing her impending nuptials to the universe instead of sharing them first with Mom, Bristol may just have insured that her plans would not be squashed by Mama Palin, who may have tried to talk her out of them or prevent them from happening.
Now that the intimate details of Bristol's pre-engagement have been released publicly in her own words, they can't be taken back and there really isn't much Sarah can do to keep the wedding from taking place. For the sake of her relationship with her daughter, Sarah Palin may have to smile, take a deep breath and prepare to become a mother-in-law!
