John Edwards: Comfort Zone

After his long-standing denials, John Edwards finally admitted on Jan. 21 what had been long suspected: that he fathered the child of former mistress Rielle Hunter. "I am Quinn's father," the former presidential candidate said in a statement about his 2-year-old daughter. "I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves. It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter, and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me." More carefully kept secrets will be revealed in the tell-all book, The Politician, written by his friend and former top aide, Andrew Young. Previously, Young had stepped forward to claim that he, not Edwards, fathered Quinn. Perhaps the worst part of the story is not that Edwards destroyed his political ambitions, but that he was cheating on supportive wife Elizabeth Edwards, who has terminal breast cancer. "I think he might have been looking for some kind of comfort," says Hirschhorn. "For a lot of these guys, sex is a major stress release."
