Why I'll Love 'Hellcats,' But Won't Let My Daughter Watch

Disney babes Alyson Michalka (Keely on Phil of the Future) and Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay on High School Musical)are about to duke it out cheer-style on the CW’s new show, Hellcats, premiering Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. And I'll admit it -- I'm excited.

Hellcats has been described as a cross between Election and Bring It On, and I just love shows that promise boyfriend sabotage, college partying and quick-witted banter. The nostalgia of being young and free definitely draws me in, though I don’t remember there being as much hair pulling and backstabbing in my own adolescence. And on top of that, years of watching The Disney Channel more than most people watch the evening news has left me feeling connected to these young starlets. Yes, I’m a fan -- something which I think is inevitable for most moms who find The Disney Channel, Nick and The Cartoon Network to be their main television fare.

However, as much as my daughter would love to catch a glimpse of Sharpay and Keely together on the small screen, she won’t hear a single "Gimme an H!" This show is certain to be the antithesis of anything I’m trying to teach her about manners, appropriate behavior and basic kindness. We already witness enough cattiness and name calling in the G and PG-rated shows on kids' networks to last a lifetime. So, I say to the moms, "Bring it on," and to your daughters, "Turn it off!"
