Why Loungewear Is Worth the Investment

Plus, don't forget -- February 19 is National Sleep-In Day!

Before I moved in with my boyfriend, I lamented every cute outfit he didn't get to see. If we spent all weekend together, there were still four workday looks going to waste.

But since we started cohabitating a few weeks ago, late nights at work, slushy commutes home and snowy weekends spent indoors have brought on the exact opposite of my fashion fantasy -- the one where I make dinner and type away on my laptop in '50s style dresses and crisp J. Crew blouses.

I'm so sick of my winter work clothes that I slip into something cozy the second I get home each night -- my biggest, frumpiest sweatpants. I even developed a handy blue/grey/black rotation to keep things interesting.

My new mission: Invest in a few lovely, impeccably cut loungewear items for around the house. While I won't get rid of my treasured sweats, it's time to supplement.

Since this is a clothing category I've never seriously paid attention to, I spoke to Bianca Jade first. Bianca is Mizzfit.com's health and fitness expert, and advocate of National Sleep-In Day, presented by P.J. Salvage. The point of this genius new holiday, on February 19, is to encourage Americans to sleep-in and de-stress.

What's more, Bianca told me that owning loungewear you love is good for you because it can help get you in the state-of-mind for relaxation. "When you feel good in what you're wearing, whether it's gym clothes or pajamas, you're priming yourself for success."

"I like to lay my pajamas out on my bed hours before my actual bedtime as a way to look forward to sleep," she says. Choosing something she adores helps her drift off with positive thoughts in her head, improving the quality and regularity of her zzz's, she adds.

Suddenly my mission has even more meaning.

I looked to P.J. Salvage first, especially since the company is donating 500 pairs of PJs to Pajama Program, a nonprofit that provides new jammies to children in orphanages. They have the perfect pair of tailored, T-Street Terry Pant (pictured; $50 at P.J. Salvage). These are soft-to-the-touch and hug your body without hiding it.

For a more alluring look, the Berry Teddy All in One ($60 at Topshop) is like soft a summer romper for indoors and perfect under a robe on chilly mornings.

Or, if your robe is getting ratty, this Fleece Zip-Up Wrap (pictured; $60 at Victoria's Secret) is a more versatile and detailed take.

These Roll-Over Wide-Leg Lounge Pants (pictured; $8 at Old Navy) are incredibly slimming without putting any pressure on your body -- possibly the perfect lounge pant.

This Empire-Waist Maxi Dress in heather grey (pictured; $20 at Forever 21) combines hippie glamour with warm cotton comfort.
