For weeks now, the world has been consumed with royal baby fever. We had almost reached a saturation point when—whammo!—Sharknado mania took over. In case you missed it last night, Syfy aired the campy thriller about a tornado that swooped up a gazillion sharks and flung them all over Los Angeles.
We don’t know if it was the cheesy special effects, the too-hot-to-go-outside weather, or the 90s flashback cast of Ian Zierning and Tara Reid, but people were riveted -- and, apparently, tweeting up a storm. Even celebs got caught up in the madness. At one point last night, Sharknado was commanding an estimated 5,000 tweets a minute, including ones from Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde, and Michael Chiklis.
Of course, the only thing that can cut short Sharknado’s 15 minutes of fame is the birth of the royal baby. Prince Charles supposedly threw some chum in the water by suggesting Kate Middleton was already in labor, though that appears to be just a rumor. But even with a bank of frenzied photographers waiting (like, yes, sharks) outside St. Mary’s hospital in London, we bet nothing can faze the new mom- and dad-to-be. In fact, we’re guessing they’re pretty happy that the world is focused on something else for a few minutes right now -- even something as absurd as a tornado of sharks.
