Oh, 'Wife Swap'! The Controversy Never Ends

The ABC reality series returns for a new season with more clashing families and off-camera consequences

ABC's Wife Swap (8 p.m. ET) airs its season 6 premiere tonight. Yes, the show that brought us Richard Heene (father of  "balloon boy" Falcon Heene) has chosen a new crop of crazies to entertain us with temper tantrums and silly displays of ignorance. Hooray?

As usual, two extremely different families trade moms for two weeks. During the first week, the visiting mom lives by the new family's rules. In the second week, she's in charge. Tonight, Marian (Ro) Drago, a loud, heavyset mom of three from New Jersey, switches homes with Teresa Cameron, a strict Alabama mom of three. "I'm not gonna win no housekeeper of the year award," says Drago, while Cameron strongly believes in the value of hard work and discipline. This should be interesting.

The premiere arrives on the heels of a Wife Swap scandal: Alicia Guastafarro, an 18-year-old who appeared on the show when she was 15, is now suing Disney for $100 million, for defamation of character. A 2008 episode portrayed her parents as pushovers who pampered Alicia, their pageant-winning daughter. According to the New York Post, "The former Little Miss Buffalo said she was instructed [during taping of the episode] to pretend to get a 'Christmas present' every morning, to angrily return her cereal to her mom and to repeat such lines as 'I am the most popular girl in school'" on camera.

The notion that reality stars are coached by producers will shock exactly no one. But the suit does disclose that Guastafarro's mom was paid $20,000 by producers. Interesting. So for Wife Swap participants, it's your dignity in exchange for $20K? In this economy, guess you can see why some consider that a worthwhile swap!
