Should Brooke Mueller Reconcile with Charlie Sheen?

According to a story in this week’s People magazine, Brooke Mueller is "very eager” to see husband Charlie Sheen and “have the children see their father" -- despite the fact that a Christmas day blowout between the two prompted Mueller to call 911. "My husband had me with a knife,” the actress, 32, told police in Aspen, Col., where the  family was vacationing. “I was scared for my life and he threatened me." Sheen, 44, was booked for second-degree assault, menacing and criminal mischief, and was ordered to have no physical contact with his wife.

As we all know, in the American justice system, one is innocent until proven guilty. So it’s only fair to emphasize that no one yet knows what took place between the tussling pair (no one, that is, except TV’s highest-paid sitcom star and his wife). Sheen’s representative has pleaded, "Do not be misled by appearance.”

However, Sheen’s trouble with women is nothing new, and E! Online has posted a detailed a list of violent incidents, including Sheen accidentally shooting then-fiancee Kelly Preston in the arm in 1990 (no surprise -- the engagement ended), then being sued five years later (while married to model Donna Pool) by a student who claimed Sheen struck her in the head after she said no to sex, and then there's his no-contest plea to 1997 battery charges brought by ex Brittany Ashland (she claimed he threw her onto a kitchen floor and split her lip). Of course, in 2005, Denise Richards famously filed for divorce from Sheen while pregnant with their second child; the “inappropriate behavior” she cited included gambling, drug and alcohol problems, and dalliances with prostitutes. Sheen denied Richards' claims, calling them "laughable and inane."

Mueller’s lawyer tells People that the couple wants “to try and save their marriage.” Since violence against women is often a lifelong pattern for abusers, one wonders not only whether this marriage can be saved, but whether this husband can be changed.
