Could Howard Stern be taking Simon Cowell's place on American Idol? Cowell has announced his plans to leave the show at the end of this season, and Stern told Sirius radio subscribers last week that he was "approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year." The New York Post later confirmed that the show was Idol.

But the deejay said he didn't accept the offer just yet.

"I did turn it down," he told his listeners. "I'm not even sure If I want to be working. I'm waiting to see what happens."

A Fox source told the Post the network thinks Stern would make "great TV and would clash with the other judges such as Ellen DeGeneres and the contestants."

But a different source says nothing's set in stone. "Howard isn't ready to leave radio and would like to stay on at Sirius," the insider said. "We believe this is a ploy to make Sirius pay up and keep him on his huge contract."
