It's time to welcome Willie Geist as the new co-anchor for Today's 9 a.m. news hour.
Geist is no stranger to the morning news circuit, having served as a host on MSNBC's Morning Joe and Way Too Early. He also isn't a stranger to Today, after being a guest host on Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb's segment and filling in for Matt Lauer pretty regularly this year. He also is an occasional comedian, meaning he'll know just how to liven our mornings up. Sounds to us like he's a pretty perfect fit -- and that's news Geist is excited to hear.
"I'm thrilled," Geist said during a visit to the show on Oct. 10. "I was thinking coming over here about 60 years of Today show history going back to Dave Garroway. And to be some small part of that is completely humbling."
Geist is replacing Savannah Guthrie, who is moving to host during 7-to-9 a.m. hours as a replacement for Ann Curry.
Apparently the Today team is just as happy about having Geist on board as he is to be there. Executive producer Jim Bell says that Geist is a welcome addition to the Today crew.
"We are thrilled to add Willie to the Today team," Bell says in a statement. "He brings a solid news background with a keen sense of creativity and humor. From politics to pop culture, Willie is a skilled and versatile reporter who will make a great addition at 9 a.m. and contribute to the entire broadcast."
And Lauer is excited, as well. "You are a talented guy, but also -- what we've all come to know over last couple years -- you're an awfully nice guy," he said after breaking the news. "And we're thrilled to have you with us."
Geist's first day at 9 a.m. cohost will be on Nov. 12, when he'll be joining fellow co-anchors Al Roker and Natalie Morales. We're excited to see what he has to offer!
