Window Treatments for Sliding Doors

I have sliding doors to the backyard, facing south, in the family room. I need privacy at night and need to diffuse light in the late afternoon. What treatment other than vertical blinds could you recommend? --Karen

Question:

Here's a trick I like to do:

  • Take a pine shelf and run it across the top of your slider, resting it on a decorative wooden shelf.
  • Place brackets on both sides (six to eight inches wider than the opening) to support the shelf.
  • From bracket to bracket, add a closet pole on two pole cups.
  • With big wooden rings, add solid drapes left and right, with dense sheers in the center (also on wooden rings for easy open and close).

You will have filtered light in the middle of your sliders, and at night you can simply close the heavy drapes for privacy. You'll have a new overhead ledge to merchandise stuff too.
