Give Them Something To Look Forward To
“On the first day of each month my three children all huddle around my calendar. One by one the children close their eyes and select a day to be ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ for the day. On that day they choose what we will have for dinner and get special attention. If it's not a school day, they will invite a friend to spend the night or rent a movie. It's a big thrill to the kids, and little effort for parents.”

Let Them Entertain You
“Children love to put on shows! This seems to defy age limitations. Young children can dress up in leotards and tights. All you have to do is put on classical music, and they will work out a dance routine--lots of giggles, hysteria, and banging around. When they are ready to perform, put out chairs for the parents and any other audience members, set up a lamp spotlight, put on the music and let the show begin! Be sure to have lots of applause at the end. Older children will write scripts and you will definitely want to videotape the productions. An after the show ‘cocktail’ party with soda in champagne glasses and appetizers is definitely in order. Enjoy your children, they're free entertainment!”

Good, Clean Fun
“When the kids are bored and longing to go outside, help them select water-proof toys from their collection, put them in swim suits, and throw them, the toys and a lot of bubble bath in the tub. Add sponges, silly music, bubble blowing kits, whatever you have on hand. Spread towels on the floor to place ‘washed’ toys on to dry (and to keep slippery kids from falling). It doesn't hurt the toys (it could even help), and the kids are occupied and happy.”

Instill a Love of Reading and Writing
“Start your kids on letter writing, have them pick a person, or maybe even a pen pal, to write once a week. This could be wonderful for keeping up with grandparents.
