Kelly, 24, is an avid runner, having done five half-marathons, one full, and a 10K in the past year. She spoke with iVillage about participating in the NYC Half on March 16, where she took selfies with unsuspecting hot guys and posted them on Instagram during the race. While we are thoroughly impressed with her ability to run and post a picture at the same time, we are more impressed with the amount of viral attention she's gotten.
“Before the race started we were in our holding corals and I spotted the first #hotguysofthenychalf behind me and came up with the idea and the hashtag,” Kelly explained.
You might think that updating Instagram would slow her down, but in fact the opposite happened. “Spotting the handsome gents sped me up,” Kelly says. “When someone would pass me or if I spotted someone up in front of me, I would run ahead of them, check them out from the side and then try to get in front of them to snap the picture.” It proved to be a smart racing tactic — Kelly finished the race in two hours and 1 minute, her second-best half marathon time ever and only one minute shy of a personal best.
Plus, it was a welcome diversion. “I didn't really train for this race because of the crazy winter we had, so live Instagramming was kind of a way to take my mind off the race. (And finding cuties/making myself laugh is the best distraction from the cold and exhaustion).”
So, did any of the guys realize what she was up to? “A few of them had to notice because I definitely wasn't sly about it, especially towards the end of the race. One of the hotties was tagged in one of my Instagram photos by his friend! And another, one of my co-workers knows!”
To us, the takeaway is this: Even running a half marathon in the freezing cold can be fun if you have the right attitude. Now that her Instagram pictures have gone viral, Kelly says, “It's been fun shining a light on running. Hopefully more women will want to run 5ks, 10ks or half marathons!”
Here are all of the hot guys of the half -- according to Kelly!
