This Christmas week, we bring you a story that absolutely encapsulates every important message of the season: love, family, and selfless giving.
We’re still wiping tears after hearing the story of a wife and mom named Brenda who passed away after losing her battle with ovarian cancer in 2011. Prior to her death, she shared a letter with a friend, with the instruction that this friend send the letter to the local radio station after her widower, David, had found new love again. And since David had just gotten engaged, the friend sent the letter and the radio station made the whole amazingly beautiful and deeply inspiring story public this season.
The letter contained three wishes. First, Brenda wanted her husband’s new love to be treated to a day of pampering because she knew that life as a stepmom of three would be demanding and challenging. Second, she wished that the new blended family could take a magical vacation together. And third, she wished the doctors and staff who provided her cancer care could be rewarded with some wining and dining for the loving and tireless work they did on her behalf, and continue to do on behalf of other cancer patients.
As part of its “Christmas Wish” program -- which Brenda was so fond of -- Star 102.5 in Des Moines worked with local partners to grant all three wishes, including sending the new family of eight off on a Disney vacation.
See the 15-minute video of the session here, with sweet David crying as the letter is being read, and then the wishes being granted. In fact, there’s hardly a dry eye in the studio. And certainly there’s not a dry eye here at our desks either.
