Each week we pick one woman who's done something to make us proud.

This week, we’re inspired by The Last Song star Kelly Preston for persevering in the face of unimaginable tragedy. It’s been over a year since the actress’ 16-year-old son Jett died from a seizure on Jan. 2, 2009. Since that time, she’s quietly grieved with husband John Travolta and her daughter, Ella, 9, and stayed out of the spotlight.

In October, she was due to host a panel called “Grief & Resilience" at the Women’s Conference hosted by Maria Shriver, but realized that she just wasn’t ready to talk publicly about her pain. "It is with my sincere apologies that I must pull out from speaking at (the) conference. I am sorry, but I truly believed that I could do it," she said in a statement at the time."Otherwise I never would have said that I could. But I am still deeply in the process of healing, and it's just too soon."

Filming The Last Song with Miley Cyrus was therapeutic for her. “Acting for me is very cathartic and it gets me out of my head," she recently told iVillage. “It keeps your mind on something else."

It’s unfathomable to think of the depths of heartbreak the 47-year-old actress has undergone with the loss of her son. But she’s shown incredible strength and grace -- and has been a strong role model for her little girl. We just hope she can find the peace and happiness she undoubtedly deserves.
