iVillage Woman of the Week: Michelle Obama

Each week we pick one woman who's done something to make us proud.

This week we're loving first lady Michelle Obama for her insightful video message about healthcare reform.

The polarizing topic of health-care has incited ongoing debates, but in a new video (watch below), Michelle breaks down why the issue is important to her as a mother. She talks about a time when her now-8-year-old daughter Sasha was a baby and she and husband Barack thought she might have had meningitis. Luckily, the family had proper coverage and was able to give their daughter the immediate care she needed. But Michelle shudders to think what might have happened had they not been fully insured.

Michelle also shares stories from breast-cancer survivors struggling to pay their bills and explains why insurance companies still get away with charging women more than men. Then she offers a forum for concerned women to get their healthcare questions answered. Kudos to her for personalizing a subject that affects all Americans so deeply.

But the First Lady wasn't all business this week. To promote nutritious eating and exercise, Michelle hosted the Healthy Kids Fair at the White House on Thursday, and leapt right into the fun. She showed her playful side by jumping rope, running the obstacle course and even hula-hooping with the little ones.

And to further prove that she's got a sense of humor, the First Lady will appear on tonight's episode of The Jay Leno Show via satellite to answer ten "rapid-fire" questions from the funnyman himself. We'll have to wait and see how Michelle handles the pressure, but we're confident that she'll have no problem going wit-to-wit with Jay.
