Sydney Leathers Takes Heat for Entertaining Weiner

Body shaming by public opinion. Oh, yay!

A mayoral candidate had online affairs (emotional and physical) with a number of women, but what’s really important here is body shaming these women as publicly as possible, amirite?  Sydney Leathers, who had an online affair with New York Mayoral candidate Antony Weiner, had the nerve to wear a bikini when she [gasp] looks like a normal 23-year-old woman. TMZ, who didn’t even bother to put her name in the headline -- calling her “Weiner’s Sexting Partner” -- wonders if such a woman is “worth” having an affair for. Then, they put up a poll where people can rate her worthiness.

Is it any wonder that every year, as summer starts to roll around, so many women consider moving to Alaska so they can wear oversized parkas the rest of their lives? Here’s the truth on how to get a bikini body: Go get a bikini, put it on. Congratulations, you have a bikini body. When I, in all of my 300-pound glory, wore my blue polka-dot bikini with the ruffles on the butt to the beach for the first time this summer, I was called “brave.” I think that brave should be followed by something like “for saving those kids from wild animals”, not for donning some swimwear. The first step to getting out of a hole is to stop digging. The first step to getting out from under body shaming is to stop shaming -- other people’s bodies and your own. One of the best ways to stand up to body shaming is to refuse to bow to it. If you’re still feeling like you’re ready to rock a bikini in public, let me suggest this great piece from Virgie Tovar.

In the meantime, let’s stop clicking on headlines like “Weiner Sexting Partner,” stop taking polls about women’s bodies that include the word “worth” and remember that our bodies are far too amazing to be judged.
