Hot Home Business: Professional Organizer

Want to work from home but not sure what you can do? The Hot Home Business Directory helps you find a business to run out of your home, lists the skills you need to do it and tells how to get started and where to get more information. Read on to find out if this Hot Home Biz is for you!

What you'll do:
Help your clients organize their lives and manage their time more effectively.

Skills you'll need:
Excellent organizational and time-management skills; the ability to effectively train corporate executives to build those skills themselves. Expertise at time-management software if you're using it in your work.

Equipment you'll need:
Computer, printer, fax, phone. If you're going to be recommending computer software, an electronic organizer or a paper-based system to your customers, you'll need a copy of the software or one of the organizers.

Start-up costs:
About $2,000 - $3,000 for a computer and software; $1,000 for marketing materials.

How much you can make:
Consultants can make as much as $1,000 an hour, though more realistic rates are in the range of $25 to $200, depending on your clientele and location.

How to break in:
Start small -- do you have a hopelessly disorganized neighbor who needs to get his home in order? Show him how to do it, and let him spread some word-of-mouth. Also: teach classes to small groups in your home, a community center or adult-education program. Publish a brief newsletter and send it out to local businesses. Get speaking engagements from the local Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations. The important thing is to establish yourself as an expert. Once you've done that, clients will find you!
