Hot Home Business: Landscape Designer

Want to work from home but not sure what you can do? The Hot Home Business Directory helps you find a business to run out of your home, lists the skills you need to do it and tells how to get started and where to get more information. Read on to find out if this Hot Home Biz is for you!

What you'll do:
You will provide your clients with landscape-design services and/or planting advice. This could entail anything from making extensive design drawings to advising clients on the kinds of flowers and plants that work best with their geographic location.

Skills you'll need:
You should be able to execute detailed drawings that accurately reflect your clients' needs. Familiarity with horticultural issues and knowledge of different plants and trees is extremely important as well. (Detailed knowledge of plants and flowers can be augmented at a local nursery.) Clients will come to you because they want to enhance their existing yards and gardens. You will respond to their needs, but you should also exhibit your own design sense.

Equipment you'll need:
A computer to organize and keep track of all your records. If you're planning on doing most of your design work by computer, you might want to invest in design software. Other than basic drafting supplies, you might also want to invest in some full-color gardening books so that you can show your clients different planting options.

Start-up costs::
A good computer will cost anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000. If you have a Website, you will pay for hosting fees ($15 to $30 a month) and a domain-name fee ($100 per year for the first two years; $50 dollars for each subsequent year). Business cards will cost from $50 to $150. General drafting supplies should not be more than $200.

How much you can expect to make:
This will depend on the number of clients you have, the amount of work that you are contracted to do and your hourly rate. If you are charging $25 to $35 an hour and are working part-time (15 to 25 hours), you can expect to make anywhere from $18,000 to $43,000 a year.
